  1. Hi Colin! Happy 4th of July to you too. I had a palate expander when I was about your age (I'm 25 now), then I had braces. I didn't wear my retainers like I should, so I decided this year (after about 10 years of crooked teeth again) to get braces again!

Guess what? I have a crossbite now in the back of one side of my teeth, so I got ANOTHER palate expander put on last Monday (June 27th)!! It's not so bad, but I sure wish I would have worn my retainers when I was a kid and didn't have to do this again. I turn my own key every other day. I will only have to have it for 6 weeks or so, because when you're an adult, it can't make any changes to your bone (because your bone is done growing and hardened by then), it can only move your teeth.

I got my braces put on the Monday before (June 20th), but only got a wire on the bottom. Once I got my expander put in on the 27th, they put a wire on most of the top teeth too.

I enjoyed reading your blog from start to finish! Just think, you only have about 1 more month left with yours in--wahoo! You'll have yours out before I get mine out probably!

  2. Hi Collin, I wanted to wish you a happy 4th too i also wanted to give you some information about my palate expander. I have braces and a palate expander at the same time. I am 9 so I'm about your age. I don't think it's fun to have a palate expander in my mouth. Well, yesterday I figured out that one part of the expander was digging into the roof of my mouth so I went to the orthodontist today and figured out that they had to take it out for exactly a month. Let me be the first to tell you that it huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurts when they take it out. I cried and I was so embarrassed! But don't let me scare you mine only hurt because I was cranky,I hadn't had any breakfast and I didn't get enough sleep last night so when you get it out it shouldn't hurt but it will put a little pressure on your teeth but your mouth feels soooo good when you get it out because it is giving your mouth a break. I hope you don't have any problems with your expander like I did keep writing your blog.

  3. Hey Colin!
I just got my expander today and it was not fun...I am having some major difficulties and can't really eat OR talk! When I talk I have this huge gross lisp and I wish it would just go away!! I'm sure you've been there with your expander..Well, Since I am just about to begin my high school years, I'm really hoping my lisp problems would leave me, so I don't make a horrible new impression at my new school. I asked my orthodontist about both the eating and talking problems and he said that I'll adapt. But what I wanted to know was how long that was going to take? I was searching the web for a possible answer when I came across the lovely blog! Wow, this is amazing, and JUST what I needed. Also, it's nice knowing that there are other people out there with that thin pallet: both kids, teens, AND adults, who are going through expansion treatment and are most probably having lots of annoying things happen to them in the process.
What I was wondering, is how long YOU had to go before talking became much more clear, and eating became "normal" with less bits of food stuck between the pallet and the roof of the mouth. What about chewing foods? At the moment the expander's spacers are preventing me from closing my mouth fully so all my teeth mesh: right now, only the two top molars with the spacers can touch the bottom two molars underneath. Was this a problem for you?

Sorry if this is too long! Any advise at all would be great!

  4. Hey Colin! I just go my expander yesterday, and will have to wear it for another four months (possibly longer, if my bone doesn't harden by then). I have been having some serious problems with eating and talking! When I eat, food is hard to chew and swallow because the appliance is preventing me from closing my mouth all the way (and I can't chew if I can't mesh my teeth together!) Did you have this problem? Also I have a major lisp and nobody can understand what I say. I'm sure THIS is something all the people with pallet expander's have to go through, but it's horribly annoying.
I am starting my freshmen year in about two months, which is about halfway through my treatment, and I really don't want to start high school with people having no idea what I am saying. I was worried about how long this lisp was going to last, so I asked my orthodontist. He said "With time" but that doesn't help me much, because I wanted to know approximately how much time. I don't know anybody else who has the palatal expander, so I started to search the internet for help, and that's when I found this wonderful blog! Wow! This is just what I was looking for!

So, my question for you is how long before YOU could talk without a lisp again? Did it ever go away at all for you? Also, when were you able to eat solid (harder) food again? Right now (since I got my braces a week ago, and even more so now I have the expander), I am living on mashed potatoes, noodles, soup, eggs, applesauce, yogurt, and ice cream. I don't think I could go months on only those types of foods!

Thank you for your time, and sorry if this is so long!! And--Best luck with your expander!
