Responses to comments and hellos to some of our new readers!

First i want to say hello to my new friends, Sophie and Brandon who just got their palate expanders. Brandon mentioned that the mouthwash they give you is gross but ask if you can get a different flavor because the mouthwash really helps to get the food out and give you yummy smelling breath.
I think about you guys who are still going through this all the time. I know how rough it is and that it is not easy especially when I know some of you got it during Thanksgiving time and now that it is Christmas and Chanukah and all the other holidays you celebrate, its not a fun thing to add.
You are all going to get through this.
Please remember to send your comments. I read all of them and try to respond to all the emails i get too.
We just reached over 10,000 hits and have people reading this in almost 40 countries so remember we are all in this together.
Have a good day and remember, you are one day closer to getting the palate expander off. You should be proud of yourself because I am proud of you.

Turkey with teeth

Happy Thanksgiving! Look at the picture I found of a cooked turkey with teeth. Do you think it had a palate expander????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
I want to wish my new palate expander friends Jules and Micah good luck with their palate expanders which they both just got on. Good luck with the key that you have to twist on the palate expander. Don't be mad at your mom or whoever is turning the key because they are only doing it to help you and it is not an easy thing for them to do knowing that they are causing you pain.
I can't believe I almost have 10,000 hits on my blog. I am so excited about that. I am so glad that this blog is helping everyone who is going through this.
Eat lots of turkey but don't forget to brush and get that stuck food out of the top of your expander with that tiny tiny toothbrush.

Hi Friends,
I hope you all had a happy Halloween last week and that you didn't eat anything that would stick to your palate expander! :)
Shreya from San Jose, California wrote that she is 7 years old and just got her palate expander. She wanted to know if it hurt when I first got it. Yes, it hurts. The whole thing is not a happy experience you know but in the end, you will be happy you did it. And be proud of yourself for going through this! It's not easy and that you are doing it, super cool for you! Give yourself a pat on the back!
Rachel and Eliza wrote too. Rachel wrote that her daughter is young too and is not happy with her palate expander and is having a hard time eating. Read my blog. Eating at first is tough. You have to teach your tongue to do new things to make it easier to eat. My mom started me off with scrambled eggs (which would get stuck!) and lots of milkshakes I could drink with a straw. Things you can drink with a straw are good at first because it doesn't hurt and the coldness feels good.
Thanks for writing.
I hope you all have a great day.
Your Friend,
Colin.
P.S. I went to Disney on vacation last week and my tooth fell out. What a great place for it to come out! Yey! And the tooth fairy brought me 4 bucks! Yey!

Hi to my friends. I found a video a dentist made of how to turn a rapid palate expander. I am pretty sure this is the same one I had because the key is the same and so is the appliance. So check this out.

http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=how+to+turn+a+rapid+palate+expander&mid=5EF7123F1210DB24868A5EF7123F1210DB24868A&view=detail&FORM=VIRE7

Oh, one hint could be that since it is hard to see, a friend of mine who had one said their mother used a small magnifying glass to see the hole better because its so tiny.

To our new friend, Micah who's mother wrote to me to let me know that Micah will be getting the palate expander a couple of days before Thanksgiving.  I remember when I got the spacers. They hurt a little when they got put in. I didn't like them but its just the first step to getting it over with so just do it, get it done, get the palate expander, write me about it and I will write you back and I and your fellow palate expander friends here can help you.

Micah's Mom made a comment about how it is difficult for her too. This is just like how my mom was - you know the woman I called the "Torturer!" hahahahahahahahahahahahahhaaa! I just asked my mom and she told me that yes, it was hard for her because she knew what she was doing was causing me pain because what mom wants to cause her son pain. But my mom got through it and I think her giving me a couple of bucks made her feel like she was stopping herself from giving me guilt and I didn't mind because I was getting money. But really a message to all the Mom's, I am glad my mom helped me with this. It means she was being a good Mom.

I hope you all have a good day. Oh, and happy halloween!

Colin

I miss it.

Do you know I can't stand not having a palate expander anymore. I really, really miss it. I miss the key too. I mostly miss the palate expander. I really wish I had it so I could write more and more to you again but I keep trying to come up with things to tell you so I do a lot of research online and answer your comments.
Yours Truly,
Colin

Mouthwash

Hi Friends,
A lot of people have been writing to me to ask if you can use mouthwash when you have a palate expander to get the food unstuck. Well, I didn't really use it because it stings my tongue but I did swish around water in my mouth and that helped to get the food out sometimes. But don't forget to use the little brush thing your dentist gives you and if the dentist doesn't give it to you, ask him because it really helps. You kind of stick the brush between the top of your mouth and the palate expander and move it back and forth and it gets the stuck food out. I used to keep it in my lunch box last year.
Me and my Mom found this website that sells the little toothbrushes. They call it a palate sweeper. here is the link we found (NOTE: we are just posting this because we thought it might help soem of you but we didn't use this, we used the one from the dentist). http://www.dentakit.com/lpapaclto.html
Have a nice day and thank you for reading my blog.

Colin :)

I hope you guys are all doing okay with your palate expanders. Congratulations to Alexa who is almost done with the turning. Great job!
Makayla is another one who is joining our palate expander group - we have to make a name for all of us who have had or will have, or are having a palate expander like the p.e.'s... no thats like for gym. We shoudl name ourselves. Anyway, good luck to Makayla. It will be okay as all of us know and soon enough the whole palate expander adventure will be over.
Have a good day.
your Friend,
Colin
p.s. if you are new to my blog, don't forget to scroll down so you can read my almost daily adventures of when i had the palate expander.

Why Have a Palate Expander if You're Getting Braces Anyway???

Hi  Friends!
I hope you are all doing well with your palate expanders! I've had mine off now for about a month but I still like to be in touch with you and say hello because if you are reading this, that means you are going through the experience of having a palate expander and I am certainly someone who understands what you are going through.

One of the questions I've gotten over and over is...

Why Have A Palate Expander If You're Getting Braces Anyway?????

I asked my wonderful dentist the answer to this question which is...

"The palatal expander really is treating the bones to ensure that the upper and lower jaws are the same size.  Yes, the teeth move now but it's because their is more space. Braces alone do not correct this problem."
I hope that answered the question.

One of our readers mentioned that her palate expander broke but after all the turns were done, so her dentist took it off. I know you are supposed to keep it on for awhile after you are done turning the key, but if this reader can let us know how long ago the turns stopped, that would be great.

I hope you all have a good day.

Answers to Some of Your Comments

First I have to say that I learned a lot about 9/11 in school this week and even though I know that I wasn't born then, I hope that it never happens again and that we are all safe and happy.

Found this online and thought it was interesting to share on my blog. These are two different kinds of palate expanders. I had the one on the left.

Now to answer some of your comments...
To Alexa:
Alexa got her palate expander on last week but this week will start to turn it. Alexa was like me - we both first got it on and then we waited before we started turning. With me, my dentist thought I was a little nervous so he wanted me to get used to it. I talked to my dentist about this and he said that sometimes kids get so scared with the palate exander so the dentist will have them get used to it before they start doing the key.
To Lucy:
Lucy wrote and said that having a palate expander is not fun. It is NOT something that is fun, but I tried to look at the positives and sometimes you will see that I wrote lists like "what you can do with a palate expander." I tried to make it funny. Maybe you can add some to the list and I can make a new list.
To Jessica:
Jessica wanted to know if I am eating a lot of popcorn now that the expander is off and the answer is YES, YES YES!!! and my Mom is happy to be able to give me popcorn for my school snack again. Yey!

I still check my blog almost every day so if you questions, I can answer it. Remember, I went through this and I know what you are thinking and how you are feeling and so are all of the thousands of people that have checked my blog.
Have a good day.

Here is the video of me getting my palate expander off

Hi to my Online friends,
These are the videos of me getting my palate expander off. From Your Friend, Colin :)

Friday, August 26, 2011

It's Off! Hooray Hooray Hooray!

Well yesterday was the BBBBBBBBBBBBIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGGGGGGGGGGGGGG day when they took my palate expander off. When they did it, the top of my mouth kind of felt a little weird because I had it on so long and I kind of forgot what it is like to have the palate expander off. My mouth feels strange without it. It took so long to get used to it and now I don't know if I miss it or not.

They used some kind of pliers to take it off. It only hurt a tiny bit and it was quick. It hurt by my teeth where they got the thing off. My Mom couldn't come with me this time because she tore a muscle in her hip while dancing with me and my brother the other day, so my Dad came and My mom told him to video it because some of you wanted to see it. I still have to get the video from my Dad and then I will put it on the blog.

So I have done it. And the dentist said it will be a couple of years before I need braces.

I will miss doing my blog and hearing all the nice things everyone has to say so I will keep writing and answer your questions and support all of you who will and are going through this. If I can do it, anyone can do it. I am proud of all of us.

Your Friend,
Colin

P.S. A message to Samantha who wrote me a very nice note. No, we are not in New York but we are on the East Coast. We will be fine. Thank you for your good wishes about the storm and the congratulations for having my palate expander off. That was so nice of you. Have a good day. Your Friend, colin

3 More Days, Popcorn, Questions, and my mom is crazy

Hi Friends,

In 3 days, I am getting my palate expander off but don't worry, I will still check on here and write and answer your questions! I am feeling a little nervous, a little confident that my mouth will be better, but I am a little scared when they take it off. Please wish me luck.

Erzsbet who is a 9th grader wrote to me about the popcorn issue. With her palate expander, she eats food like popcorn all the time, plus she has braces too! So, she asked her orthodontist who told her
"It's not about what foods you eat, it's about HOW you eat it. He said it's perfectly fine to eat foods like popcorn, as long as you're a good cleaner. Unfortunatly a thorough brushing after every meal is one of the prices you have to pay for such yummy foods (We're all *supposed* to do that anyways)..

So for this answer, I don't know what to tell you. I eat it too. Shhhh! Don't tell my dentist, but it gets stuck once in awhile. When I had my teeth cleaning, they found popcorn in it and that was bad. Well I don't know how to explain how i felt when they said that except I thought, "oops!" And you know we are kids, well some of us are grownups too who read this, and how can we resist popcorn? But today my Mom saw that I was coughing when I went to get my new glasses at the eye doctor so she said to me, "do you want a piece of gum?" and I was like "ARE YOU KIDDING? I HAVE A PALATE EXPANDER IN MY MOUTH." Maybe she was testing me. And also, I have never been allowed to ever chew gum so why did she even think that I would want some. P.S. Never had cavities...maybe not chewing gum is working for that. haha.

Another reader of my blog asked what would happen if we turned the key too many times..so I sent the question to my dentist and when I get an answer I will post that too.

3 days to go and this thing comes off.

Your Pictures

I forgot to ask...if any of you want to show me your pictures maybe before and after of your palate expander, I can post them on here (without names and anonymous). This way we can show everyone who checks it out more examples of what a great (even though it hurts) thing it is because we will all have beuatiful smiles. If you want to send me your picture, just send me a comment and I will send you an email address you can send them to.
Your Friend
Colin
thank you

Almost there...

Hi to all my friends,
Just less than a week and I have my palate expander taken off. I am going to see if they will let my mom video them taking it off. This way I can honestly answer everyone when they ask me i fit hurts to have it taken off. So far, my dentist has said no that it doesn't hurt but you never know so I will be able to let you know for sure.
There is a boy named Lucas who made a nice comment about my blog. He said he has the palate expander and he has braces. Good luck to him! He said that the tools his dentist uses are different than the tools I showed in one of the pictures we took at my dentist. I am sure that every dentist does things differently but my mom says even though they do things different, all the dentists just want all of us to have good teeth.

This weekend I am going to work on a page about the memories of my palate expander. School starts soon so my mom wants me to write a poem about it. We will see.
Have a good day.
your Friend,
Colin :)
P.S. Last week I went to my friend Anthony's party and I got to be in a dunk tank! It was fun!

Happy Saturday :)

Hi Friends,
I just wanted to give you some answers to some of the questions you were asking. My dentist and his assistant were nice enough to email me to let me know the answers to so thank you to them for helping us understand more.
So, the first question we wanted to get answered was...
Do your cheekbones expand when you get a palate expander?
The answer is yes.
That kind of freaks me out a little but I guess if the palate expander is stretching out your palate then yes, your cheeks will widen a bit but its not like you are going to have an elephant face or anything. I haven't really noticed anything.
#2
One of our readers commented that they have a palate expander that you don't have to turn the key for.
So I asked the dentist about that too and he said...
it is called a QUAD HELIX but it is used for a different kind of bite.
here is a link on youtube that shows the quad helix expander:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9JvE1Npfg8

thank you for reading my blog! good luck wiht your palate expanders....i will write again soon.
have a good weekend.

Colin

p.s. I've been participating in my local theatre group. here is a picture of me with my drama buddies performing "I'm a Believer" from the Shrek Musical. (i'm in the blue). hey, thats another thing YOU CAN DO WITH A PALATE EXPANDER....haha

Your comments!

Hi Friends,
Thank you to all of you who have been writing to me. I love to read your comments and I try to answer them the best that I can. If I don't know the answer, I send an email to my dentist and within a couple of days I get the answer and will post them then.
So, a couple of things.
One, good luck to GRADY who just a few days ago got both upper and lower palate expanders. I am really proud of you and I am sure all of your fellow palate expander friends are proud of you being so brave with having both the top and the bottom. With me, I only have the top palate expander and to answer your question about when I could eat real food, it took about a week I think to eat regular food. I am sure you love milkshakes but are probably sick of them by now! Who would have thought that someone could be sick of milkshakes! But I know too. Try some soft noodles like spaghetti. Did you do that? My mom made ramen noodles too. Pudding, and things you can just suck down instead of chewing. You will get the hang of getting the food out that gets stuck in your palate expanders too. Your tongue will automatically learn what to do.
So good luck with that.
ANONYMOUS wrote that they have a palate expander where they don't have to turn the key. I am going to email my dentist to find out more about that or ANONYMOUS if you are reading this, can you comment again and tell us more about this kind please?
Another reader was telling us that her daughter has a palate expander and has sores inside her cheeks. If I remember right, my dentist said that if I have sores in my mouth, I should come back in to see him so they can adjust whatever is causing the sores. I didn't have that but I would have the mom call the dentist and get looked it. The palate expander is already a pain, so who wants more pain.
I hope you are all having a good day. I will write again and answer the questions when I hear back from my dentist :).
Your Friend, Colin :)

Once Upon A Time There Were Two Teeth - My Palate Expander Appointment

Hey whats up dudes and dudettes...
Today I had my palate expander appointment. One more until I get this off. The dentist said I have had it on for 6 months. I don't know about that. I think that is right. Anyway, here are the tools the dentist uses to check the palate expander:
they kind of look scary, dont' they, but really they dont' really hurt.

So while we were waiting, my mom noticed that the dentists helper did not take away the spacers they must have taken off another kid on the dentist's chair next to us, so we took pictures of the spacers. See the little blue things?  Those are the spacers. I do't know what the other things are.
Okay, so back to my news. it was a LOOOOOOOONNNNNG appointment. Well because things happened that we didn't expect. Here goes My News.
Today the dentist said that my palate expadner looked great and that I have one more month to wear it. That is good news. Then he said to my mom to look into my mouth. That is when you know there is not good news, when they tell your mother to look at something. So she gets up and looks and he shows her that one of my top teeth is coming in behind my baby teeth in the front and that I will need another appliance to correct that or we can EXTRACT the tooth and since the one next to it is loose, I should have that EXTRACTED TOO!. So in my head I am trying to figure out what "extract" means again and then I remember...AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. So, next thing I know, I am in another room, a PRIVATE room. Uh oh. Then they put this thing on my mouth so my mom video'd me. Its sideways but here it is:
Here is a picture of me with the teeth I had before...

Then they have to put this mask on you to make you feel like you are floating in the sky. You can choose your smell from orange, watermelon (I think), grape, bubble gum or strawberry. So I chose strawberry. I have to tell you that I was really scared and really freaking out. Then the dentist stuck me with a needle near my two front teeth (my mom says this is so I wouldn't feel it). At the time I thought it was a long drill and that is what I told my mom afterwards. It took them like 2 seconds to pull out the teeth and then I had to wear the mask for a little while longer while they pumped "clean" air into my lungs so I would stop floating.  Here is a picture of me getting the clean air.
Can you see that I am not looking to happy and I was feeling really tired. It didn't really smell good but when I got a little used to it it was okay. Now I have no old baby teeth in the front but my new tooth is already there. So here comes the next step. I am supposed to take a wooden popsicle stick and bite on it and try to get the tooth to push forward. I have to do it every day for half an hour and IT HURTS so my mom said I didn't have to do it today since I had the teeth taken out but starting tomorrow I ahve to do it. Aah. So the dentist gave us some popsicle sticks to use but my mom asked if it was okay if since I love popsicles and especially fudgesicles, if i could just eat one of those and then take that stick which will taste good and do it that way (this is my mom's way of thinking like she does for her preschool class - always coming up with funny ways to do something and make a kid happy) and the dentist said okay. so I have to do this for a month and then on Augsut 25 I think, I have to come back and get looked at again and have the palate expander taken off which my mom says she will hope to video tape and I told her to turn the camera the right way so you don't have to watch the video sideways!
Have a good day.
Your Friend,
Colin
P.S. If you have written to me as a comment, check where the comment was posted and I usually put my responses right under those so you can see my personal answer to you. bye dudes and dudettes!
P.S.S.
here is a picture of me I had my mom take just now of me with my missing front teeth and also my messy mouth because I was eating a fudgsicle. Yum!

Popcorn

Hi Friends, I hope those of you who are in the very hot areas, are keeping cool and if you happen to be in a cold movie theatre and are at the candy counter wondering what yummy snacks to enjoy while you are watching a movie...DO NOT CHOOSE POPCORN. Oh my! So I didn't really listen very well to my dentist when he told me not eat popcorn while wearing a palate expander, but you can't blame a boy for well, not listening. I didn't listen to my mother or my dentist or the nice lady so I ate popcorn. I love it. I love it. And it smells so good when you go the movie, but guess what? Yesterday I went to the dentist for a cleaning (my palate expander is on Monday) of my teeth and guess what, the hygenist found the popcorn stuck in my palate expander, you knkow in the place in the back where it is attached to your teeth.  So boy oh boy, did I hear about it. She was nice about it but really I have to learn tohold out one more month till I get this off. So, I will try not to eat popcorn, and I am telling you guys don't eat it either, okay. We can be "no popcorn buddies"until we get the palate expander off.

Now this is a message to Shoshana in Israel who is getting her palate expander in a month. She is 9 years old and her mother writes that she has issues with pain. Shoshana, everything will be okay.  All of us are either going through this or have finished going through it. You will be fine. If anybody has any suggestions to help her or others going through this, can you please send me a comment and I will post them. All of us will have the most wonderful teeth when we are done and beuatiful mouths.

Your Friend,
Colin

P.S. Remember, do not eat popcorn. I have to keep telling myself that.

Lessons We Can All Learn About For Our Palate Expanders...from Blog Readers :)

Hi to My Online Friends,
I've gotten some nice and interesting comments so since last week I got a few, I wanted to answer them here and answer some of your questions since I don't have another appointment until I think next week (I forget!).
"Elyse" who is 25 years old used to have a palate expander, then braces, and she didn't wear her retainers. Here is a lesson for all of you after you have your braces (and for me too since I don't even have braces yet!), WEAR YOUR RETAINER, because Elyse had to get a palate expander AGAIN. So thank you for your comments Elyse, because you have taught all of us a very good lesson.
I also heard from "Samantha". Hi Samantha! Samantha is 9 and has braces and a palate expander. Like I said, I don't have enough teeth out to have braces yet like Samantha and Elyse. So, poor Samantha had something wrong with her palate expander where it was digging into the roof of her mouth. If you have any problems with your palate expander, it is important to get to your dentist right away so the problem can be fixed. Thank you to Samantha for reminding us about this. Palate expanders do hurt, but only because of the turning from the key. They shouldn't be poking you or making your mouth bleed or anything like that.
Samantha also said that they temporarily took her palate expander out and that the procedure hurt to take it out. When i asked my dentist about this, he said it should just pop out with the tool he has, but I haven't gotten to this step yet (next month I think!) so I will let you know and possibly video tape it if they will let me!
"Erz" wrote me as well. Hello to Erz! Erz just got the palate expander and is having difficulties talking and eating. As all of us who have had a palate expander, or are still experiencing it, we know a couple of things for sure...
#1...It hurts, my goodness, it really hurts when you turn that key. Yikes! But it gets better in time and you just kind of get used to it (see my older blogs for ideas on how to make the pain a little bit more bearable)
#2...You are not alone...there are thousands of us going through it each day and we understand what you are going through
#3...You will not talk funny forever...it gets better. By the time you get to school, Erz, you will be talking almost normal and no one should notice anything different. Besides, you will not be the only one with one on in school, you can bet on it. These palate expanders are so popular now, my mother says they are like video games, "everyone's got them!" You will speak fine soon, within a month or so...your tongue just has to get used to it being there. I don't even remember half the time that its in there!
#4...I remember my mom freaking out that all she could feed me were noodles and ice cream shakes (not that I thought that was too bad! haha) but I learned how to move the food around and now I can eat anything (but stay away from gum and chewy candy - not good for you anyway!). That took just a little while because I like to eat so I had to teach myself how to do it...see older blogs about that too :)
So, I want to say thank you to all of you for writing and to please continue comment. My mom says its become like a "palate expander family." So isn't it nice, that we are all in a family together, and not alone going through this.
Your Friend,
Colin :)

My Friend

Today I had a little party to celebrate the end of school. I showed some of my friends my blog. They thought it was cool. None of them have to have a palate expander but I told them when its my turn to get real braces, I will write a blog about that too because you know, kids want to know the truth, and that is why I am here.
Here is a picture of me with my friend Brooke. (She says to say hello) We have been friends since we were younger than 1 year old. That is a long time.
Thank you for sending in comments. Keep the comments and questions coming.

I had my appointment and there is some news! ACOUSAL ADJUSTMENT

This is me today with the nice dentist helper. I never met her before but she was kind of nice :) I never got her name. Oops.
Hi to All of my B log Friends,
Today I had my appointment! Yey! I was very excited to go. Isn't that strange to hear that a  kid is excited about going to the dentist but yes! I was excited to go to the dentist.
I had to go to a new office. My Mom couldn't get an appointment at our regular dentist office so we had to go a long way and take the highway to their other office. It was a half hour ride. I read my Super diaper baby book on the way.
So when we got the dentist I felt like a superstar because some of the ladies who work there came out and were excited to meet the boy with the blog and commented about it. It made me feel like a superstar. I am a superstar.
So here is what happened.
The dental assistant was nice. I don't remember if she checked my teeth but she was nice. Hello to her and the other ladies there who read my blog!
Next, the dentist came. He is pretty nice. (Si me gusta! I like it! - I keep saying that. I learned that in spanish class at school!)
He checked to see how my teeth are biting. He told my mom I am biting different. He said, "Colin is hitting the corner of his incisor tooth because it is loose" and I guess what I am doing is that I am sliding my bite. So he said I needed an "acousal adjustment" to help me bite better.
So he had to smooth my loose tooth down. So he used a drill i think that is what it was. I was a little scared and it kind of gave me like the fuzzy feeling. He told me to count to 5 and then it would be over. Then he did the bottom tooth a little too. He said he saw I had 3 loose teeth on top. Wow, will my space on top be big then because those are the teeth that will fall out.
So the appointment only took 5 minutes and he said I have 2 more appointments. My next appointment is on July 25th for another check up and then in August this will come off. What will I write about then? We named my blog the "never ending" but it will end. What is up with that?
So that was that.
Now, I also asked him to answer some of the quesitons you have sent to me so here they are - the questions and the answers.
WHAT IS THE HYOUNGEST AGE THAT YOU CAN PUT ON A PALATE EXPANDER?
My dentist said the youngest he had ever done was on a kid that was 2 1/2 years old but that they usually recommend them at around 4 1/2 so the child will kind of understand what is going on better. My Mom said she remembers they told her around the time I was 6 but then they said they didn't think i could handle it because I seemed like a nervous kid then. So they decided to wait. i guess so I wouldn't freak out.
HOW LONG DOES A PALATE EXPANDER USUALLY STAY ON?
My dentist says it usually stays on for 6 months. You turn it for a few months and then you leave it on like like a retainer.
HOW DOES IT COME OFF?
My dentist says he has something that squeezes it and then it comes right off. I will let you know the real scoop when that happens because you know my job here is tell you what is really going on with this thing.
IS IT NORMAL FOR ONE'S NOSE TO WIDEN SUBSTANTIALLY WITH AN EXPANDER?
Okay, this part I didn't know. So my dentist said it can widen slightly. What????? Did my nose get bigger? My mom said that it couldn't have because you know I wear glasses and if my nose got bigger my glasses wouldn't not fit. So I guess I am one of the lucky ones.

So that was my appointment.
But you know my mother always tries to make an adventure out of everything. So she brought me and my brother to this place called Wild Bill's. here is a picture of me in front of it.

It was a cool place. My mom said it is a place where she can "re live her youth" because it had all of these old things like old lunchboxes and toys from when she was a little girl. I just thought it was cool and I got a Bugs Bunny poster.

Then I had to go to baseball. My team won! here is me up at bat.

So I hope that I answered your questions and gave you a good update.
Keep writing and I will answer your comments and emails.
have a good day.

I think I have a loose tooth

Today i went to my mom's class after school. Her class is hatching eggs - for chicks. So today she had 3 chicks hatch. They are so cute! We waited two hours at the school to see another one hatch. you coudl see the hole and the little beak sticking out and then an arm and then it kind of rested for so long tha tmy mom said it was time to go home but while we were waiting I played with some of the toys with my brother and my friend and then my mom let one of the chicks that hatched yeterday run around on the floor and it wen tover to my hand and it walked over it and then it pecked my fingers
But tha tis nto why I am writing. I want to tell you that one of my front teeth is finally loose! at least I think so but don't worry, I ti s not going to affect my palate expander.
I hope you have a nice day. I just wanted to tell you about my tooth.
hey, how are you doing...the ones who told me they just got the palate expander? I hope you are doing okay with it and hey, you are one more day closer to having less days to turn it.

Now it is time to find out about you and here is a joke too!

This is me with my Opa. He came to visit me from Florida. I am playing the piano for him. Oh, that is something you can do with a palate expander...play the piano..haha

Hi to all my blog friends out there! How are you doing? I hope you are all doing okay? I have been wondering who is reading my blog. I looked today and I have over 1,485 hits! That is soooooo cool. I am wondering who you all are. Do you all have palate expanders too?
When you write comments, I will answer them so let me know and then I will answer you :).
I have to tell you that yesterday I was supposed to go for my checkup for my palate expander. I didn't go. My appointment was for 2 o'clock and my mother couldn't get me out of school early to take me. i don't know why they don't make my appointments for after school. My mom said she will try and get an appointment for after school. I don't like missing. Besides my brother has pneumonia and it was raining and she didn't want to go out in the rain with him. Tha tis another reason why I missed my appointment.

You know sometimes I forget that I even have the palate expander so if you are just getting yours, don't worry, because it goes by really fast. I was so scared when i first got it and my mother was going crazy with fear because she was so afraid to hurt me. It does hurt when you turn it. Tha tis the the truth, but then you kind of get used to it. Now I am in the part where it just hangs out in my mouth to keep my mouth the new size. I have not lost a lot of baby teeth so I will not even get braces for a couple of years I think because don't you need your grown up teeth to get braces? But at least when I get my grown up teeth, there will be space for my new teeth to fit in.

Here is a dentist joke I found to make you guys laugh...
Why did the king go to the dentist?
To get his teeth crowned...
haha..
I will tell you that I really didn't get that but my mom has a crown so she was trying to explain it to me about what a crown is.
Have a good day.
thank you for reading my blog
Hang in there if you just got your palate expander..it will be okay :)

Question Answered...

Hellllllllllllllllllllloooooooooooooooo friends,
how are you?
"W" from Sweden asked about how much my mouth was stretched out with my rapid palate expander. This is the email from the dentist to answer that.

"The expander has an 8m screw. Each turn is 1/4 of a mm. His total expansion was 8mm.  There is also a 12mm version of the appliance. "

when you look at that on a ruler, its really not that big but boy did it hurt and now I still have the space in between my mouth but my mom says she doesn't think it looks as big as it did. I haven't had to turn it for about a month now but it stays in my mouth to hold the stretch I think.

Have a good day. I am going to my school concert now to sing.

Colin :)

Good and Bad

THINGS THAT ARE STILL A PAIN HAVING A PALATE EXPANDER

Still talk a little funny
Things like pretty much everything except for drinks still get stuck
Nothing else really

THINGS THAT ARE NOT A PAIN HAVING A PALATE EXPANDER

Brushing my teeth
Watching tv
Playing video games
Playing on my Little League Team
Playing with moon sand
Doing karate and getting my green belt the other day! Yeah!

WHAT IS COOL ABOUT HAVING A PALATE EXPANDER

I got to write a blog and now I am famous! Even a few of my friends read my blog for their reading challenge homework for school.

Today I saw I have 1,197 hits so me and mymom checked to see where people read it from so here goes..
US.A., Canada, Denmark, UK, Sweden, Germany, Russia, Australia, South Korea, Japan, Phillipines, Lebanon, Denmark, Austria and China.

I am making new friends on the internet who are going through the same thing as me.

Oh, my mom said to write that one thing that is cool about having a palate expander is that my teeth will be great! Yeah!

Have a nice day.

Oh, I will email my dentist today about finding out how many millimeters my mouth changed. That was a good question from "W" in Sweden...Hope they will answer back soon.

See you right here on my blog next time. Adios amigos. See you another day.

Oh, I am going bowling now.

I'm back...sorry for taking so long

Hi Everybody, I am sorry that I have not written in a few weeks. I have been really busy but I have not forgotten about all of you and this blog.
So I went to the dentist and guess what, no more turning! Hooray! Actually I was a little bit sad because I thought I would have nothing left to write anymore and I really like writing and my mother said that I am getting better at my writing because of this blog.
So I am not turning anymore. The dentist told my mom not to turn it anymore. She said, "no problem." She didn't like turning it anyway because she was always feeling like she was the  "torturer" like I called her the first few times. Well maybe I called her that more than just a couple of times but IT HURT!!! So the dentist turned it one last time for now and did something to it but I don't know what so that my mom couldn't turn it anymore. She was like, "don't worry, I won't turn it" but the dentist told my mother that there are some mothers who still want to do it. Are they crazy???
So I have to go back to the dentist in a few weeks and I then will write again. Now I have to go back every 6 weeks to get it checked out. I don't know how long I will have to do that for. I think they said I can get it off during the beginning of 3rd grade.
I hope you have a happy Easter.
Your Friend,
Colin

Some more information

Happy Monday.
Some of you have asked me questions about the palate expander but since I was sick and missed my appointment and my next one is not until Thursday, here is a web site I found with my mother that might give you more information. Really I am thinking that I have been pretty good in giving you information, like the real truth about the pain and how things get stuck but this website we found is pretty good I guess too. I also think that I pretty much tell you how sometimes its not that bad and at other times it really STINKS! Like when food gets stuck in it and you have to take your time eating something like today I was eating my favorite pasta salad and the noodles were getting stuck and all I wante dto do was eat it quickly because it is so good but I had to sit there with my tongue trying to get the noodles out so i could keep eating!!!!!!
I just don't want you to think that I have not been working on this blog because I love doing it.
Have a good week.

It is Sunday and I just forgot to tell you in case anyone wants to know is that things still get stuck in my palate expander like my mom made eggs this morning again before we went out and they got stuck again. I was sitting at the island and I wasn't talking and my mom said I know that you are getting the eggs otu of your palate expander! How did she know that? But yes, she was right. Things still get stuck but I can get them out quick, quick quick!

Some kids are just mean

This week at early morning dropoff at school there was this boy and this is the same one who picked on me on the kindergarten bus and he was taking my backpack and kicking it all over the cafeteria!!! But the thing that made me want to cry and then I did in the afternoon in my mims car was that this same kid was making fun of the way I speak because of my palate expander!!! He kept saying I speak like a baby! When I got into my car in the afternoon when my mom picked me up I was crying. I also cried because I got punched in the eye at recess. It was not a good day and that eye punch was from a different kid! My mom went to school the next day and took care of it but I hate that the palate expander makes me talk funny. Can't they do something so that you don't have to talk like this. My mom said that at least she sees big changes in myouth so I guess that's good. I only have to turn the key 3 moretimes and them I go back to the dentist but I don't know when that is.

Tuesday, March 15, 2011

Ouuuuuuuuuch

I went to the dentist you know a few days ago and I have to tell you that now when I do the key, it is WORSE than before well now it is getting better but the first few days it was hurting again really baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaddddd! It was stinging on my right side and then I got a little cut in my mouth but today it is not bothering me so much, the cut is what I am talking about. My grandma was here the on Saturday and when my mom turned the key, I was screaming and crying and why am I telling you this? Oh yeah because I am trying to tell you what is going on with my palate expander. Well like I said it is feeling a little bit better now but you know I haven't turned the key yet today. I hope you have a good day.
Your Friend,
Colin.

The Key Has Started Again!!!!!!!!!!!

Me at the dentist office. I am playing video games. I like to play Mario Kart X-Box. the game is really cool!
This is me and my dentist. He is nice.
Today I went to the dentist. It was a little fun. I got 2 silly bands. One I didn't really  like because the dinosaur one I liked, but one more that came in the little container from the prize machine was a little pink princess. I really don't like that one.
The assistant came to get me from playing my video games. She took me to the dentist's chair. She checked my teeth. She said she had to put some pressure on each side with this metal thing. I thought it was funny because she took this jar thing filled with all of these metal pliers and stuff and put it on the tray  in front of me. I was sitting there the whole time wondering if they were going to use all of those tools in my mouth but no, they did not. They only used like one or two. Then she asked me to bite down and she wanted me to loosen up my mouth, the bottom part but I didn't quite get that. So she was using her fingers to close my mouth in some special way I didn't get. That was okay. It did not hurt. Then she left and some other lady came in to talk to me about my blog. She said she had read part of it and thought it was cool. Me and my mother told her that people from so many far away places read it like in South Korea and Australia and the Netherlands but i don't know where that is really but My mom said it is far from here in the U.S.A.
Then the dentist came and I asked him if i could take a picture of him with me for my blog so that is the picture you see here today. He is a nice guy. So he looked in my mouth for a little while and I don't know what he was doing but then he said, okay, well I only have to turn it 12 more times. I did not want to tell him but really I want to turn it 20 times again. Come on, how do they expect my teeth to be fixed if I can't turn it 20 times. So he turned it for me. The assistant gave me a new chart and my mom asked if she could round off the top of the key because it has been getting a little stuck some time. So they did that and then the dentist told my mom that now the key would have a different feeling so she had to stick it in the whole to see what the new feeling would be. did I tell you already that they gave me a new chart? Well they did and now, oh wait, I told you about that already. Sorry
Okay, well I am going to go to bed now. But I want to tell you that I had a fun time.
What they did to me was fun stuff. It was so fun that I wish i could go back tomorrow or maybe everyday.
Goodnight.

The Key Has Ended!

This is a picture of me with my chart.

Me filling out the chart. This is what I do every day.

See the space in between my teeth???

Hello. the key  has ended. It has ended. It has really ended, ended all day long! I have to go to the dentist on Thursday. I get to get out of school early becasue my appointment is at 12:30. So I don't have to turn the key until then. I have to start turning the key on thursday again if the dentist says so. I am so happy and a little sad. I am sad because I can't do the key anymore but I am happy because i get to go to the dentist and get the prize machine again and get a slinky. The 6th slinky, the 7th slinky, the 8th slinky.
See you here again next time on Kids News. Next Time (or after I get back from the dentist on Thursday!)
Bye Bye...Okay, I am going now to finish my homework. I didn't know I would get so much homework in second grade. What is up with that?????

Saturday, March 5, 2011

Biiiiiiggggg Spaaaaaccccee!

It is growing. I am talking about the space in between my front tooth. Now it is starting to look like I lost my front teeth. Well I have to tell you that even though I am now 8 years old, I have only lost 2 teeth and that are my bottom teeth and my top teeth are still there but it doesn' tlook like that anymore. It looks like I lost one tooth. Okay, well now the key when it turns does not hurt my left side anymore. It hurts my right side but only for a few minutes.. When I went to my piano lesson and I saw Miss Bouchard, she told me that she had a palate expander too but when she was in 6th grade and not 2nd greade like me. She asked me if it hurts me on top of my nose and then she pointed to the top of her nose. Well I had to tell her that no, it does not hurt my nose but it was nice of her to ask me how I was doing and now I know that even more people have the palate expander.
I went to the Connecticut Science Center today and it was fun. They should have something about palate expanders there. Now I am going to have dinner. Goodbye. See uyo later

The Easy Key

When my mom twists the key, it doesn't hurt that badly anymore. I don't really whine anymore like I did the first couple times I did it. But now it doesn't really hurt that badly and when I bite it doesn't hurt that bad actually.
The space in between my front teeth is getting bigger.
I ate a bagel and a big chunk got stuck in my palate expander but I kept pushing it back and forth with my tongue and it came right out in medium sized pieces.
Thats it for today.
Hasta Luego.
Your Friend,
Colin
P.s. My mom is getting worried that because I am not complaining anymore that she is not doing it right so when she takes my brother for his checkup on Friday, she is making me see the hygenist there too. She says she doesn't want us to waste our time if it is not working but I am telling her over and over that its working. Calm down Mommy!
P.S.S. My dog Tybee says hello.

9 to go! Yeh!!!!

So I have to say that I think I only have 9 times to go for my mom to do the key. Then I have a 2 day break and theni go back to the dentist and they will tell me whatis next.
So how am I doing?? I am okay with this. Today my mom made eggs for breakfast and I still had trouble eating them. This is like one of the only foods I gave trouble eating and I don't know why!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why?????????
My mom said I should menshun that sometimes I get headaches awhile after the key us turned. Sometimes it hurts me on the sides of my eyes near my cheeks. Omaha well I am going to my brothers boy scout thing now. Have a nice day.

Thank you for writing to me!

Thank you for your comments. Now I know I am helping somebody. Actually I do now that I am helping a lot of people who might have to get the palate expander and that are actually going through it right now but maybe have not caught up to the same part as I am now. It is a little hard but i still do it. The key hurts me a lot but the next day it gets a lot better. When my Mom turns the key it really  helps. it gives a lot of pain to me but it gets better quickly. Like right now Mommy did the key about 15 minutes ago but now it feels better and I am eating chocolate cake with sea salt on it. The cake tastes really good. it tastes better than a normal cake. You just make a vanilla cake with choclate frosting, and then put sea salt on it and wait for it to cool for like 5 minutes, maybe 4 minutes or 3 minutes or 2 minutes or 1 minute. It was my idea for the sea salt. You might think its gross but really when you taste the frosting and the rest of the cake combined, it tastes WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
wE FOUND these pictures on line. This is a BEFORE picture, not of my teeth but what my mouth looked like I think when i got this put on. It looks like an egg shape.

This is what my mouth is supposed to look like after. Pretty good. Pretty, pretty good! What do you think?. It looks like half an oval!!!!!

Here is me with my teeth mold. Maybe you can ask your dentist for yours too for a souvenier!

This is me and my friend Zachary before we went to Karate. Zachary is the one with the blond hair in case you don't know. I want to put an arrow but my Mom doesn't know how to do that.
So if you have any questions for me, leave me a comment, okay?
Good night. Thank you for reading my blog. I like doing the blog.

Tuesday, February 22, 2011

I almost choked on a cucumber but I am okay.

Today my mom took me and my brother to Magic Wingls Butterfly place in massachussetts. It was a loooong ride but my mom gave me a Phineas and Ferb book activity book so I worked on that and of course I had a dvd player to watch a Mario video. TheThen wewent to the Yankee Candle Factory and I got to dip my hand in hot wax. It was not so bad but I made a cool claw!
That is my claw!

So I have to tell you about my palate expander now. I do not like it but my mom says she is beginning to see a difference in my mouth so this is a good thing. I have 13 more times to have the key. That is not so bad. Tonight I did not cry so much. I just wanted to play the Wii so even though it is not the weekend my mom said because it is vacation i can play it but i have to be in bed by 8 so I will do this and then go play. My mom is helping me type some of this so I can go play. Thank you Mommy!
I have to tell you something funny about my palate expander. When my Mom does it now, she lays me down.  Tonight she laid me down on our kitchen island where there is good light and when she did, she didn't realize that there were two hamburgers there and she put her arm in the ketchup and the mustard on the burger. haha.
I will be happy when this thing is off. I cannot wait but my Mom keeps telling me that I am helping others by writing this so I am doing a good deed. Now I want to play the Wii. Good night.

the key hurted

the key hurted. Thats it for today. The end.
From Your Friend,
Colin

p.s....note from Colin's Mom...its tough to turn the key and be the one who is causing discomfort on your child. Colin cries a lot but we try to distract him with drinking ice water before and after and trying to distract as much as we can. He is also the one who has to mark the chart so it gives him something to do. This is a big guilt thing on the parent, at least from my perspective and I can tell you my husband is not disappointed that I am the one doing this, at least that is what I think from his looks :).

Me and my grandmother and the BUCKS!

tHIS IS ME AND MY GRANDMOTHER AND THE MONEY, HONEY!

The Nine Bucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got hurt in my mouth with the key thing. It hurt because it twisted too far back already. My Grandma was here and my Grandpa was here and so is the Oma. They are here for a party with me and my brother for our birthdays. I got a marshmallow shooter but I took part of the marshmallow shooter off and stuffed part of it with cotton and blew out the other end and boom! Right now the cotton looks like a dog.
My Grandma was watching when my Mom did the key. It actually really hurt. It still hurts. I got $8 from my Grandmother and $1 from my mom. I got the money because I got the key twisted in my mouth. My mom said she will double it every day. I will be rich! in a couple days I will be really rich.

Friday, February 18, 2011

Half an hour later!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is only a half hour after by the way and its not hurting anymore. Just wanted to tell you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think it didn't hurt after a few minutes. Have to go clean the basement with my mom.
P.SSS,... I don't see the space in the middle of my teeth yet. When is that going to happen, I wonder?????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Ouch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hate this thing. Whenever I bite, it hurts. My mom had to turn it. It hurted a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We have to do this 18 more times and then I get a break. Finally. That will be my happy day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My mom has to do this one stinkin time a day.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We have a chart we have to mark so my mom made me mark it with a grey marker to show we did it. i did it at 4:30 in the middle of eating grapes and then my mom said it was THE TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So she did it and I cried!!!! But then my mom gave me water in a cup with ice and I dropped a grape in it and then she made me gargle and told me to gargle songs. So I choked! I tried gargling the ABC's but after I finished the letter D, I started choking. It was BAD. iT WAS BAD TO THE BONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thats it for today. We'll continue tomorrow right here on Kids News.

He is bad to the bone. His name is Duncan and he is from my favorite show Total Drama Island.

here is a video

So I am online with my mother seeing if we can hookup this blog to other peoples blogs and we found this video. it is not really the same kind as mine but close to it. Okay, so I did not know that my teeth in the front were going to give me a big space! What is up with that? But my mom said the dentist said it today. My key is a little different and so is my palate expander which is a little different looking too but it will give you an idea of what it is like. Looks kind of scary but really, this is OKAY. Calm down. It is really fine. The only one who will probably freak out is your mothther.
http://azureortho.com/products
if we find out what the kind is that I have exactly and there is a video for it I will post that too so you can see exactly what I have going on in my mouth.

Back to the dentist - Time to Turn the Key - Dun Dun Dun Dun!!!!!!!!!!

Here I am at the dentists office. I can play video games. Cool!

This is the fake mouth my mom had to practice turning the key on. She was freaking out a little bit. The key is the long blue stick with the pointy thing. The pointy thing goes in a hole and you have to flip it back.

this is Judy. She is not really doing anything. She is faking it for the picture. haha

This is the good part. I get ANOTHER PRIZE! yEAH!
It hurt when they put the key in. It hurt for like 4 seconds. Now I am home. We picked up my brother and I am eating crackers. If you are getting a palate expander, STOP READING THOSE HORRIBLE STORIES ONLINE LIKE ME AND MY MOM DID. I will tell you the truth. So far it does not hurt so bad. Well my Mom was the one who turned the key at the dentist. Judy the woman at the dentists office showed her how to do it on a fake mouth. The fake mouth was made of plastic. It had crooked teeth. I don't think my teeth are that crooked. I don't know. I will worry about that later.
Good news: Judy said my mom onlyhas to turn the key for like a few months and then this thing stays in like a retainer for awhile and my mom does not have toturn it anymore then. I think that is good news.
News number two: I have piano lessons in a little while and I think it will be okay because I have no pain. Yeah!!
